Head Teacher Appraisal Performance Management

HTAPM Headteacher Pre-Appraisal Meeting

Diocesan adviser meets with the Headteacher with an aim to help the Headteacher to

  • Achieve a realistic perspective on their performance  
  • Identify priorities which are sufficiently challenging but are not too ambitious 
  • Recognise relevant areas for continuous professional development.

Our approach: We will agree a date and time for the support that is convenient to you and identify a named consultant to work with you. This will be confirmed in writing. Our Diocesan associate consultants and professional partners are all practitioners with appropriate and relevant experience in Headteacher Appraisal Performance and Management.

Please book this meeting with your Diocesan adviser when requesting and booking the HTAPM Service. Please let your Diocesan adviser know if you require more or less than 1 hour. This meeting takes place prior to the Appraisal meeting.

What the head teacher pre-appraisal meeting involves: 

  • 1 hour meeting 
  • Diocesan Adviser and Headteacher attend

HTAPM Governor Pre-Appraisal Meeting

Diocesan Adviser meets the Governors review committee to help to form a more comprehensive picture of the Head teacher’s performance than they might otherwise achieve, discussing your preliminary advice and the evidence that supports it.

Our approach: We will agree a date and time for the support that is convenient to you and identify a named consultant to work with you. This will be confirmed in writing. Our Diocesan associate consultants and professional partners are all practitioners with appropriate and relevant experience in Headteacher Appraisal Performance and Management.

Please book this meeting with your Diocesan adviser when requesting and booking the HTAPM Service. Please let your Diocesan adviser know if you require more or less than 1 hour. This meeting takes place prior to the Appraisal meeting.

  • Diocesan Adviser and Governor Panel attending

HTAPM Service

The Appraisal review meeting is where the governors should be equipped to lead the meeting with the Adviser working in a supporting role, advising where relevant. The atmosphere needs to be positive and conducive to open, frank and challenging discussion.

Our approach: Our expectation is that the Chair of Governors and Headteacher have confirmed requirements prior to booking the service. We will then agree a date and time for the support that is convenient to you and identify a named consultant to work with you. This will be confirmed in writing. Our Diocesan associate consultants and professional partners are all practitioners with appropriate and relevant experience in Headteacher Appraisal Performance and Management.

When to book the pre-appraisal meetings: 
Please confirm and book with your Diocesan adviser in advance the pre-appraisal meetings with Headteacher and Chair of Governors in preparation for the appraisal review meeting.

What the HTAPM involves:

  1. Facilitation of appraisal review meeting
  2. Attendance by external adviser at the appraisal meeting - duration 2 hours
  3. Comprehensive Guidance Materials
  4. Research of the school’s SDP and School Data
  5. Appraisal Review Statement (as agreed with review committee)
  6. Telephone Support

HTAPM Panel Training

This training is appropriate for newly formed HTAPM Panels or panels who have little or no previous training for appraisal management within Education.

This training is for recently formed Panels who are new Headteacher Performance Appraisal Management. The training is shaped toward equipping panels with a better understanding of the process.

The aims are to help the panel:

  • Fully understand Headteacher Appraisal Performance Management
  • Become more skilled, focused and effective about the timelines.
  • Be confident it has a clear delineation of roles and responsibilities,
  • Review and ensure it is equipped with the correct skills and experience to meet the needs of the school and the appraisal

Our Diocesan associate consultants and professional partners are all practitioners with appropriate and relevant experience in Headteacher Appraisal Performance and management.

Please book this training with your DIocesan AC SIP when requesting and booking the HTAPM Service. This training takes place well in advance of the Pre-Appraisal and Appraisal meetings.

The Chair of Governors should contact the Education Team or their Diocesan AC SIP in advance of booking their annual HTAPM services to discuss whether training is needed.
